I have Acevpn working in Windows 7 and now in Linux as well. I have looked around for installation info for Android but have not found it. Android Market has some apps for OpenVPN but all of them appear to be for rooted phones and mine is not rooted and I don't want to brick my phone by attempting to root it. Is there a way to use VPN without rooting the phone?
thanks

Android has few issues with vpn and it may or may not work depending on your device. Try this configuration.
Protocol: L2TP Host: IP address of our server Username: Use your existing Acevpn username Password: Use your existing Acevpn password Shared key or Secret: leave this blank. |

Not working on a ZTE Racer, Android 2.1update1. The vpn settings allow to 'Enable L2TP secret' - but not to leave blank if enabled, it has to be either disabled, or non blank if enabled. If disabled it won't connect (and unable to connect is about all the error message says), and it's not possible to enable and leave blank. Similar PPTP issues here (my 'phone was bought about this time, and has had no updates since): http://android.modaco.co.../vpn-issue-on-r7/#entry0

For L2TP secret can you try "acevpn" without quotes. |

Results in a "Challenge error."
The ZTE Racer I think is more or less a lost cause, ZTE do not release firmware updates for the 'phone (never have done, not about to start from what I can gather). I'd guess on account of it keeps the cost down to about two thirds the nearest rival.

FYI Second attempt with another VPN provider that provides support for Android and L2TP/IPSec PSK VPN, same error results, support staff also unable to fathom it out.

How do I find out the IP address of the server? Here is what I see for the 2.3 OS for the EVO. C/P VPN Name: Set VPN Server: Enable L2TP Secret: Set L2TP Secret: DNS Search Domains: End C/P

You can find the IP address in the openvpn config file. The config files can be downloaded from the members area. If you are having trouble finding the IP's send an email to support with your username and the country you wish to connect and we can email you the IP's. |

I see a assigned IP in the bottom right of the task bar. Is that the IP you are talking about?

Are you seeing 10.x.x.x IP in the taskbar? It's a private IP. In the openvpn config file look for "remote". In the following example A.B.C.D is the IP address.
remote A.B.C.D 443 #US |

remote A.B.C.D 443 #US Yes that is what I see. I sent a email to support and they sent me a list of server IP's. I can not ping the Las Vegas IP so I will use L.A. server. The next problem is the list you provided is not what I see. I posted a C/P of what I see in my VPN settings on the phone. Can you please tell me what I need to put for it? Thanks

For reference, the Android ZTE Racer I mentioned above, it turns out the problem is the 'phone does not actually have the necessary kernel modules for L2TP or PPTP to work - even though the settings menu implies it is possible to use these.
I think most Android mobiles should be OK, and the latest ZTE now has Android 2.2 installed so hopefully the problem is fixed at this point.

Even if you can't ping you might be able to connect to it. You just need to set the VPN name, VPN server, username and password. Rest leave the default values. The screen might look different but the settings mentioned in the 2nd post should be set / configured. |

Please look at my post #8. There is not a place to add the user name or password. Please look at the C/P I posted and tell me what goes where. Thanks!
